The Sarod evolved from the Rebab, some refer to it as a bass Rebab. It is a relatively recent instrument, having its origins perhaps no more than 200 years ago. There are 8 played strings, 2 drone strings and 7 sympathetic strings. Floral inlays and a brass toomba add to the visual interest. It is played with a pick made of coconut shell.
